moeten = om te zeggen dat iets nodig is en 

Don’t have to: niet hoeven = als iets niet nodig is.

You have to come home straight after school (Het moet)
You don’t have to come home straight after school (Hoeft niet)
Do I have to come home straight after school? (Moet het? Is het nodig?)

Moeten = om te zeggen dat iets echt moet
I must cook dinner. = moet ik echt doen

Mustn’t (must not) om te zeggen wat je niet mag doen
You mustn’t stay up late. (Dit mag echt niet.)

Vergelijk met:
You don’t have to go there. (Het mag maar het is niet nodig.)
You mustn't go there. ( je mag daar echt niet heen)
