One/Ones 

Je gebruikt deze woorden om herhaling van een eerder gebruikt woord (zelfstandig naamwoord) te voorkomen.

We are looking for a new bike. Perhaps one in white?

I like horror films or romantic ones.

One gebruik je bij enkelvoud en Ones gebruik je bij meervoud.

Gebruik one/ones

Na deze woorden kun je one/ones gebruiken: - een bijvoeglijk naamwoord - which - this (enkelvoud)/ that (enkelvoud)  / these (meervoud) / those (meervoud) - lidwoord (the) - als zelfstandig naamwoord.

Examples

There are big problems and small ones (na bijvoeglijk naamwoord). I have to read a book. Which one should I pick? (na which) Do you like thrillers? This one is a must-read. (na this/that/these/those)

Muffins? I like the ones with chocolate best. (als zelfstandig naamwoord)

The new smartphones are much faster than the old_____.

Voegwoorden (linking words)

Met voegwoorden (linking words) verbind je twee zinnen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan Nederlandse voegwoorden als: omdat, zodat, maar, tenzij, want, en & of.

In dit onderwerp leggen we je uit welke voegwoorden we kennen in het Engels en wanneer je welk voegwoord kunt gebruiken.

because, as, for, since (want, omdat)

Met because, as, for en since geef je een reden of oorzaak aan.

- She left him, because/as/for/since she didn't love him.

- Ze ging bij hem weg, want ze hield niet van hem.

- Since he is happy, he has a smile on his face.

- Omdat hij blij is, heeft hij een lach op zijn gezicht.

and (en)

Met and geef je een opsomming aan.

- In my opinion, Andre Agassi and Roger Federer are the best tennis players ever.

- Naar mijn mening zijn Andre Agassi en Roger Federer de beste tennissers ooit.

or (of)

Met or geef je een keuze aan.

- Do you like to have coffee or tea?

- Wil je koffie of thee?

Met so en so that geef je een gevolg aan.

- I go to the gym three times a week, so (that) I stay healthy and fit!

- Ik ga drie keer per week naar de sportschool, zodat ik gezond en fit blijf!

but, though, although, even though, however

Met but (maar), though (hoewel, alhoewel), although (hoewel, alhoewel), even though (ondanks dat) en however (echter) geef je een tegenstelling aan.

- They are strong, but/though/however we are smart.

- Zijn zijn sterk, maar wij zijn slim.

Er zijn wat subtiele verschillen in het gebruik van but, though, although, even though, however:

1. Although is formeler dan though, daarom gebruiken we although vaker in schrift en though vaker in spreektaal

2. Even though is een sterkere vorm van tegenstelling uitspreken dan although

- Although they are very smart, they made a lot of mistakes.

- They are very smart. They made a lot of mistakes, though.

- Even though they are very smart, they made a lot of mistakes.

3. Als beide tegenstelling even zwaar in gewicht zijn, gebruik je however/but

- They are strong, but/however we are smart.

4. Als de ene tegenstelling belangrijker is dan de andere, gebruik je though/although

- They may be strong, though we are smart.

- Although they may be strong, we are smart.

--> Slim zijn lijkt hier belangrijker te zijn dan sterk zijn

5. Hetzelfde als punt 4 geldt voor however, alleen komt however iets 'positiever' over

- They may be strong, however we are smart.

Vuistregels

*Met because, as, for en since geef je een reden of oorzaak aan.

*Met and geef je een opsomming aan.

*Met or geef je een keuze aan.

*Met so en so that geef je een gevolg aan.

*Met but (maar), though (hoewel, alhoewel), although (hoewel, alhoewel), even though (ondanks dat) en however (echter) geef je een tegenstelling aan.

Zet het correcte voegwoord in iedere zin. Kies uit: because, as, for, since, and, or, so, so that, but, though, although, even though & however.

1. John ..... Timothy went to the basketball match yesterday evening.

2. Sarah loves her husband, ..... he is always friendly and very funny!

3. Do you want to play a game ..... do you want to go to the park?

4. ...... we never see each other, we often write each other letters.
