Completed action took place at a specific time in the past

- I saw a movie yesterday.

Past habits and generalizations

- He played the violin.

Present Perfect

- action happens at unspecified time before now 

I have seen that movie twenty times.

- action happened in the past and is still going on

I have had a cold for two weeks.

Past perfect

Action took place once or many times before another point in the past.

- I did not have any money because I had lost my wallet.

- Tony knew Istanbul so well because he had visited the city several times.
