What is a Possessive?

A possessive is a grammatical form that indicates ownership or relationship between two things.

Define what a possessive is and give examples of possessive forms.

Singular Possessive

The singular possessive is formed by adding an apostrophe and an 's' to the end of a singular noun.

Give examples of singular possessive nouns and have students practice forming them.

• Singular: Names of people and animals, even if they end in -s.  
• Plural: Irregular forms that don't end in -s

Plural Possessive

The plural possessive is formed by adding an apostrophe after the 's' of a plural noun.

Give examples of plural possessive nouns and have students practice forming them.

Inanimate: 'of'

You use 'of' to form a possessive when something is owned by an inanimate thing, country or city.
