What is the book about?

Een non-fictie collectie van dagboeken geschreven door Engels lerares Erin Gruwell en haar studenten (Freedom Writers). Een school in Californië wijst haar een klas toe die "onhandelbaar" is, waarvan de meeste uit 'cultureel afgedankte' achtergronden. 

De studenten beginnen met dagboeken bijhouden, waar ze schrijven over hun persoonlijke strijd, hoop en gevoelens. Gruwell introduceert ze het dagboek van Anne Frank en andere boeken over vrijheid en overleving. De studenten raken geïnspireerd en beginnen geld op te halen om Miep Gies, wiens familie Anne Frank hielp, te laten spreken op school.

Reading

• Start reading the first chapters of the book in silence.
  (One minute extra each time I hear someone speak)
• Highlight words you don't know/understand (or write them down)
• After 15 minutes we will have a discussion
   together.

Discussion

• Write your own answers down in Engllish to the following questions:
• What is your first impression of the book?
• Are you curious about what happens next? Why?
• Which diary/character attracts you most and why?
• What do you think of the language? (hard/easy)
• After 5 minutes we will discuss it with the group

End of class

• Wat heb je geleerd?
• Waar gaat hoofdstuk 2 over?
• Volgende week vrijdag gaan we verder met Freedom Writers

We are going to watch the movie before reading (a part of) the book.

A few assignments are done during & after the movie :)

We will watch 15/20 minutes each time and have a short follow-up discussion/assignment each time.

The Freedom Writers Diary: Book.

• Every lesson you will get time to read for 6 weeks.
• One assignment every week.
• Are you participating in both parts weekly?
  You can earn 0,5 to 1 points extra for the reading test!
• There is a PDF of the book available or I will print it out for you. Tell me what you prefer.

Eindproduct

• A document of choice: Word or PowerPoint (needs to be presented)
• Titelblad: Naam, klas, datum. 
• Inhoudsopgave
• Inleiding: Welke opdrachten kies je en waarom?
• Een samenhangend document met iedere opdracht duidelijk benoemt en beschreven. (5 minimaal)
• Slotwoord/conclusie: Wat heb ik hiervan geleerd? (meer uitleg volgt)

Opdrachten en beoordeling

• Je kiest minimaal 5 van de 15 opdrachten uit en werkt deze uit in je document. 
• Iedere week lever je 1 van de opdrachten in en werk je verder in hetzelfde document zodat het uiteindelijk een samenhangend geheel wordt.
  
• Als je aan het eind van het project alles op tijd hebt ingeleverd en voldoet aan de criteria (beoordelingsformulier): 1 punt extra op de leestoets. 
• Heb je alles op het laatst ingeleverd maar wel volledig en volgens de criteria?: 0,5
• Niets ingeleverd, incompleet of te laat: Geen extra punten.

Deadlines 

• Hand in one assignment weekly, starts Friday next week (03-12)
• Hand in one assignment every Friday before class.
• Everything at once is possible, but will effect your extra credits.
• Final deadline: January 14. A document with all the dates can be found in Teams. Questions?

Test Yourself (online)

• Do test yourself online (verplicht af voor vrijdag)
  
• Done with test yourself? Start reading the first part of the book (pg. 1 - 21) and start with your first assignment of choice.

Reading Project

• Every Friday you will get time to work on your assignments.
• Every class: 10-15 minutes of Silent Reading. Start/end of class.
• Handing in a portfolio is obligated! (verplicht)
