Present Continuous
Present Simple
Use
We use the present continuous to talk about:
  • Actions that are happening now, or around now.
  • Temporary situations.
  • Changing or developing situations.
  • Irritating habits, often with always.



Use
We use the present simple to talk about:
  • Habits and everyday routines.
  • Facts and general truths
  • States. Some verbs that describe states are believe, hate, have, know, like etc.



 

Signal words:
Always, every day, often, regularly, usually, sometimes, hardly ever, never.

Right now, at the moment, nowadays, today.

Narrative tenses are the tenses we often use to talk about the past
Past simple
Use
We use the past simple  to talk about:
  • Completed past actions or past states.
  • A sequence of actions in the past.
  • Past habits.



Examples 
- We visited Rome last year.
- He smiled at me and replied. 
- When I was young I always drank coffee in the morning.
Past Continuous
Use
We use the past continuous to talk about:
  • Background descriptions.
  • Actions in progress at a specific time in the past.
  • Longer actions interrupted by shorter actions.
Examples 
- The sun was shining...
- I was playing football this morning.
- I was watching tv when the phone rang.



Past Perfect
Use
We use the past perfect to talk about:
  • An event that happened befor another action in the past.
  • To talk about two completed past actions (event that happened first = past perfect).



Examples
- They had saved a lot of money before they went on the cruise.
- When we had checked into the hotel, we found our room.
