What is the Past Continuous?
Unlike the Present Continuous, the Past Continuous talks about ongoing affairs in the Past, rather than the Present.

When do we use it?
  1. Something in the past went on for quite some time
  2. Something was ongoing in the past
  3. Something was happening, when suddenly something else happend!

How is it used?
Similar to Present Continuous (to be + verb + -ing)
Past Continuous = Was/were + verb + -ing

  • We were looking for our dog yesterday.
  • The teacher was explaining something, when suddenly a lightning bolt flew through the window and struck him!
  • I wasn't working hard when you came to check on me.

Exceptions
1. Verbs ending in -e lose the -e:
To lose: Our team was obviously losing.
2. Verbs ending in one consonant after one vowel:
To sit: We were sitting in the kitchen at the time.
3. Exception if the verb ends in -w or -x:
To snow: It was snowing all day.
4. Verbs ending in -ie:
To die: The dog was dying when we found it.
