1.(zou) kunnen 

Om te zeggen dat iets mogelijk is:

• can        (waarschijnlijk)                                 It can become very cold in Siberia.
  
• could    (minder waarschijnlijk).               It could become very cold tomorrow.

2. vermogen/vaardigheid/mogelijkheid

Als je iets kunt doen omdat je het vermogen/vaardigheid hiervoor hebt:

• can                         (present simple)                                            I can wash up the dishes.
  
• could                     (iets wat je mogelijk zou kunnen)         I could help if I want to.

                                        (soms verleden tijd van can)                  Forunately I could stop the bus in time.

• to be able to       (alle werkwoordstijden)                            I am able to help him. I was able to help him.
  

3. (zou)mogen

Om aan te geven dat je iets van iemand mag:

• can                             (present simple)                         I can stay out late, my mother said so.
  
• could                         (is verleden tijd van can)        I could stay until the morning, that's what she had told me.
  
• may                            (formeler dan can)                    You may start the presentation now.      
  
• to be allowed to.  (alle werkwoordstijden).        Are you allowed to stay over? Were you allowed to stay over?

4. je stelt een beleefde vraag

Vaak in combinatie met please.

• could              (beleefder dan can).     Could I have that book, please?
