Simple past and present perfect

simple past: verb + ed / irregular verbs

- used when something happened in the past

present perfect: have / has + voltooid deelwoord 

- used when something started in the past and continues into the present

- used when something has just finished

- used when something happened in the past (!)

So, both can be used when we are talking about past activities. 

However, when the sentence tells you when something happened, you have to use the simple past.

I saw / have seen that movie.

I saw that movie yesterday.

Signaalwoorden helpen je per zin welke grammaticale tijd je moet gebruiken. 

simple past: tijdsbepaling in het verleden (last week, five years ago, when I was young, etc.)

present perfect: since (+tijd), for (+tijd), so far, yet, just, how long ...?, always, never

She ... ill for two weeks now. (be)

I ... her since 2000. (live)

They ... this church in 1650. (build)

She ... to New York two years ago. (move)

It ... since 10 o'clock. (rain)

I ... her for two years now. (know)

We ... our trip last week. (book)

How long ... her? (you know)
