Persian wars
Persian empire was big and strong.
They conquered Greek colonies -> harder to trade for the Greek poleis.
They revolted against the Persian empire and won.
Athens became the most important (and strongest) polis.
Second Persian war: son of Persian king wanted revenge for his father.
He tried to conquer Athens.
The Greek poleis won again.
The assignment isn't focused on the Persian wars.
Perzische Rijk was groot en sterk.
Ze veroverden Griekse kolonies -> moeilijker om te handelen voor de Grieken.
Ze kwamen in opstand tegen het Perzische Rijk en wonnen.
Athene werd de belangrijkste (en sterkste) polis.
Tweede Perzische oorlog: zoon van de Perzische koning wilde wraak voor zijn vader.
Hij probeerde Athene te veroveren.
Griekse poleis wonnen weer.

and the real war began.

The fall of Athens
Pericles (Athens) kept the Spartans away for some time.
But Pericles dies from the plague.
Athens is taken over by Sparta.
The end of the Athenian democracy.
Both poleis lost loads of people and wealth.
They keep fighting a little bit -> both less important.
Basically the end of Greek poleis.
- Pericles houdt Spartanen lang buiten.
- Maar later slecht met Athene, Sparta neemt over.
- Einde democratie in Athene.
- Sparta en Athene veel verloren.
- Rol minder belangrijk.
- Wel nog steeds ruzie.
