Persian wars
  • Persian empire was big and strong.
  • They conquered Greek colonies -> harder to trade for the Greek poleis.
  • They revolted against the Persian empire and won.
  • Athens became the most important (and strongest) polis.

  • Second Persian war: son of Persian king wanted revenge for his father.
  • He tried to conquer Athens.
  • The Greek poleis won again.
The assignment isn't focused on the Persian wars.
  • Perzische Rijk was groot en sterk.
  • Ze veroverden Griekse kolonies -> moeilijker om te handelen voor de Grieken.
  • Ze kwamen in opstand tegen het Perzische Rijk en wonnen.
  • Athene werd de belangrijkste (en sterkste) polis.

  • Tweede Perzische oorlog: zoon van de Perzische koning wilde wraak voor zijn vader.
  • Hij probeerde Athene te veroveren.
  • Griekse poleis wonnen weer.

  • After Persian wars. Athens: Delian League & looking for alliances.
  • They expanded their power.
  • Sparta also wanted power: Peloponnesian League.
  • Sparta vs. Athens: who is the strongest?
  • 457 BC: Athens tried to steal Spartan allies.
  • 431: Athens tried to steal Corinth and the real war began.

The fall of Athens
  • Pericles (Athens) kept the Spartans away for some time.
  • But Pericles dies from the plague.
  • Athens is taken over by Sparta.
  • The end of the Athenian democracy.
  • Both poleis lost loads of people and wealth.
  • They keep fighting a little bit -> both less important.
  • Basically the end of Greek poleis.
- Pericles houdt Spartanen lang buiten.
- Maar later slecht met Athene, Sparta neemt over.
- Einde democratie in Athene.
- Sparta en Athene veel verloren.
- Rol minder belangrijk.
- Wel nog steeds ruzie.
