The lesson will start once everyone has done the following:
- Open your macbook
- Open the Huntington's disease assignment
- Put away phones etc.
- Stop talking
Slide 1 - Slide
Goals for today:
Be able to calculate the chance of inheriting a trait/disease or of being a carrier in monohybrid
and dihybrid inheritance
Be able to name exceptions to 'normal' monohybrid inheritance (e.g. X chromosomal)
Understand why you got the grade for the test that you did
Slide 2 - Slide
Complete the Huntington's Disease assignment (see Classroom)
If you haven't checked your answers to the monohybrid inheritance worksheet Part A and B yet, do this first
You have the rest of the lesson to work on the assignment.
Work individually:
your own opinion
matters!
Usual rules: no phones (unless permission asked), yes music.
Slide 3 - Slide
Flexible work time:
-
First priority: complete the Huntington's Assignment
and hand it on on Classroom (we will discuss it this class)
-
Second priority: Complete the dihybrid cross worksheet
- Optional:
extra exercises dihybrid cross
choose an article about genetics to read (see Classroom)
help your classmates
You may work together with your neighbors.
Slide 4 - Slide
Huntington's Disease assignment: discussion
Expectations:
Have handed in the assignment
Have joined the lessonup
Have the assignment open on your computer
Give each other room to talk and be heard; listen
Actively participate
Slide 5 - Slide
What are the chances that the child (from the assignment) will get Huntington's disease?
Slide 6 - Open question
Why isn't it possible to be a carrier for Huntington's?
Slide 7 - Open question
What was the most important factor in your decision to have children or not?
Slide 8 - Open question
Slide 9 - Slide
Slide 10 - Slide
Discuss with your neighbor:
1) Why does the disease primarily affect boys? (Remember, the gene is on the X-chromosome)
2) Is the allele for Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy dominant or recessive?

Slide 11 - Slide
What do you think dihybrid inheritance (or: a dihybrid cross) means?
Slide 12 - Open question
Practicing dihybrid crosses
Goal: completing the dihybrid cross worksheet
If you are not sure how to do this, you can use:
- the examples on page ... of the book
- the video '...' in the classroom
Slide 13 - Slide
Discussing the test
- First: an announcement about question 7 and 8
- Then: take 15 minutes to look at your test results and check your grade: grade = (points/33)x9 +1.
- After that, we will discuss the most difficult questions together
