Als je deze signaalwoorden tegenkomt in een tekst, weet je dat de schrijver aan het einde is gekomen van bijvoorbeeld zijn verslag of zijn opsomming van argumenten. Door het signaalwoord weet je dat je nu een gevolg of een conclusie kunt verwachten.

Tegenstelling 

Als je deze signaalwoorden tegenkomt in een tekst, weet je dat de schrijver een andere kant opgaat in zijn tekst dan ervoor. De schrijver gebuikt bijvoorbeeld een argument tegen wat ervoor is gezegd.
