  • I walked to school yesterday. 
  • We went to the sportsday last monday. 
  • I had a party last weekend.

The past simple
Rule= whole verb + ed. 
  •  Already an -e? --> Whole verb + d. 
I changed my clothes this morning. (To change)
  • Ends in vowel + consonant?  --> Double consonant + ed. 
We stopped doing our homework last night. (To stop) 
  • Ends in consonant + y? --> ied. 
I tried my best. (To try).

Past simple 

  • Het verleden.

Questions in the past. 
  • For questions there are 3 rules:
1. You put was, were and could at the beginning of the question. 
Mirjam was ill this weekend. --> Was Mirjam ill this weekend?
We were at the festival last week. --> Were you at the festival last week? 
2. Other verb? add did to the beginning, followed by the verb (without to).
You listened to me. --> Did you listen to me? 
I made notes. --> Did you make notes? 
3. Asking a question with when, how, where, what or why? Put the wh-word at the beginning + was/were/could or did + verb.

Negative sentences in the past
  • For negative sentences there are two rules: 
1. Was, were or could? Add -n't or not to the verb. 
Mirjam was not ill this weekend. 
We weren't at the festival this weekend. 
2. Other verbs? Add didn't + whole verb - to
You made notes. --> You didn't make notes
