Wanneer de zin bevestigend is, is de tag ontkennend. 
Wanneer de zin ontkenned is, is de tag bevestigend. 
Bijv. He can work, can't he?  
Je gebruikt het ww uit de zin, maar als dat niet kan dan gebruik je een vorm van do! (do/don't, does/doesn't, did/didn't) 
Na het ww herhaal je de persoon (alleen I/you/we/they/he/she/it)

Ze komen voor het hoofdwerkwoord:

Maar na am/is/are/was/were:
