Vietnam (1)
  • Before WW2 a colony of France
  • During WW2 occupied by Japan
  • After the war struggle to gain independence from France
  • Major resistance group was the communist Vietminh led by Ho Chi Minh
  • France lost this battle

      Slide 4 - Slide

      Vietnam (2)
      • Vietnam was temporarily divided
      • North Vietnam was communist
      • South Vietnam was capitalist
      • Border was at the 17th parallel
      • The United States (secretly) supported South Vietnam

        Slide 5 - Slide

Domino theory: if one country falls for communism...

        Slide 6 - Slide

        US support to South Vietnam
        • North Vietnam supports communist supporters in South Vietnam: Vietcong
        • Civil war ensues in 1957
        • Americans support South Vietnam, first with ‘advisers’ and weapons, then with troops (late 1963: 16,000)

        Slide 7 - Slide

But...why do things go so hopelessly wrong in Vietnam?

        Slide 8 - Slide

        How did the war proceed?

        Slide 9 - Slide

        Chemical warfare
        • The United States deployed everything to win the war: napalm for firebombs and Agent Orange, an aggressive defoliant that continues to cause great harm to people and nature

        Slide 10 - Slide

        Increasing protests against the war
        • First television war. Many journalists travel with the soldiers, who can film and photograph everything
        • The war can be followed from living rooms on television and in newspapers
        • The world sees how the US army commits terrible war crimes

          Slide 11 - Slide

          Slide 12 - Video

          LBJ!
          How many kids
          did you kill today?

          Slide 13 - Slide

          End of the war
          • Domestic pressure becomes too much for the US: the American people want the war stopped
          • Vietnamisation: give the war back to the Vietnamese
          • Withdrawal of US troops
          • Peace treaty with North Vietnam/Vietcong in Paris (1973)

          Slide 14 - Slide

          Effects of the Vietnam War

          • In 1975, North Vietnam, invades South Vietnam. The country becomes communist in its entirety in 1976.
          • The US has lost much respect in the world.
          • US soldiers return traumatised.
