In which situations do you write a 'formal letter' (formele, zakelijke brief) ?

Een zakelijke brief
*is a letter of application (sollicitatiebrief): When you want to apply for a job / traineeship (stage)

* is a letter to a company (gericht op een bedrijf): When you want to know more information about a product / service (such as something you bought online) / when something happened. 

* is a letter of complain (klachtenbrief): when you received a broken product, when the service at a restaurant was very bad.

Example: Letter of complaint... 
Dear Sir/Madam, 
 
I am writing to complain about a meal we had in your restaurant on the first of March 2001. 
We had booked a table for six but when we arrived at the place, there were no free tables and we had to wait for more than 45 minutes to sit down. 
From a menu of 12 dishes, only four were available and their quality was poor. The fish, in particular, tasted awful and the waiter was rude when we told him about this.  
We have eaten in your restaurant several times in the past but this is the first time we have received such bad treatment. Therefore we would like you to take this complaint seriously and give us a refund on the meal at your restaurant. Please transfer the full amount of £52 to my bank account EN888555223755.  

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

AANHEF: (Start van je mail/brief) 

-Dear Sir/Madam,  (in je allereerste brief/mail weet je niet of  het aan man / vrouw wordt gestuurd)

-Dear Mr  + achternaam,  (Als je van te voren al weet dat je aan een  man de brief/mail stuurt)

-Dear Mrs  + achternaam, (Als je van te voren al weet dat je aan  een vrouw de brief/mail stuurt) 

-Dear Ms + achternaam (als je van te voren al weet dat je aan een ongetrouwde vrouw de brief/mail stuurt) 

en: 

I am writing because I  want to complain (klagen) apply (solliciteren), gain information about (informatie verkrijgen over)

You're writing a letter to a supermarket manager called Lilianne Segman. She's married. In the first paragraph (alinea) you're telling her that you are writing because you want to apply for a job as a shelf stacker at the local supermarket in your village.
Start your letter with the right salutation: 'aanhef' and tell why you're writing.

*In een zakelijke brief kun je niet afsluiten met: 'love', 'kind regards, 'see you'; Dit past niet bij een formele (zakelijke) brief en wél bij een informele brief.

In the final paragraph (alinea) you are writing that you are looking forward to hearing from that person within two weeks' time.
Also, end your e-mail in a fitting way (passende manier).

De inhoud van je brief... (Being polite)
Let even op het volgende in je zakelijke (formele brief);
-ideaal! (you = je, jij, u) Dat is dus lekker makkelijk... 

- Geen samentrekkingen: aren't, isn't, don't, haven't, (spreektaal)
- Wél uitelkaar schrijven:  are not, is not, do not, have not (klinkt deftiger)
-Vermijd: wanna, gonna, 'cuz, Imma, (spreektaal)
- Wél: officiele spelling gebruiken (want to, going to, because, I am) 
-'Please' wordt heel erg gewaardeerd. In de Nederlandse cultuur communiceren we wat directer. In Engeland wordt vaak: 'Please, 'Thank you' gebruikt omdat beleefdheid in de communicatie centraal staat.

Correct the following line: "I'm gonna send you some personal info 'cuz I wanna apply for the job of shelf stacker at your supermarket."
