Writing becomes darker
As an officer, he is brave and inspires his men. He is awarded the Military Cross.

Gets wounded and spends time in an officers' hospital. When he goes back to France, he becomes more reckless.

A friend mentions mental problems

What happens afterwards?

After getting wounded a second time, Sassoon writes an open letter protesting against the war, which is published in The Times. 




This act  could have been considered treason, but he avoids punishment and is sent to a mental hospital in Scotland instead, to be treated for shell shock. 

After the war, he continues to write both prose and poetry. He dies in 1967.

  • English soldier and one of the leading poets of WWI
  • Learned to care for people as a vicar's assistant
  • Joined the army in 1917
  • Spent some time at a mental hospital because of shell shock, where he   met Siegfried Sassoon
  • Wrote many letters to his mother
  • Was killed in action on November 4, 1918, just one week before the end   of  the war. He was 25 years old.

Anthem = a song, often sung on a special occasion, that has special importance for a particular group of people. A national anthem (een hymne)

  • Read the poems and analyse them using the glossary
  • Decide which poem is your favourite and why
  • Take the writing test
  • Write a poem using your new acquired knowledge
  • Oral exam in groups of 3/4 about all of the above
