How do I use the past perfect? (v.v.t)
how? had + voltooid deelwoord : I had slept, She had been. 
when? 
  • when an action had already finished (clearly done) when something else started. -> When I woke up, she had already left. 
  • when a moment in the past had happened for a while. -> When she married him, they had seen each other for two years. 
  • conditional sentences (= if zinnen/bijzinnen) -> If I had known, I might have married her. 
  • Indirecte rede ->  He told me, he hadn't slept all night.

How do I use the past continuous? (o.v.t.)
How?  was/were + werkwoord + ing : I was sleeping, I was being
when? 
  • when something was happening at a specific moment in the past (short time) -> At seven o'clock I was doing my homework
  • when something was happening (past continuous) and was suddenly stopped by something else (simple past = onderbreking)  -> Mike had an accident, when he was playing football. // Kelly was dancing, when she broke her leg.

Important note! 
  • When two activities are happening after each other (na elkaar) = 2x past simple 
After I broke up, I moved away. 
  • When two activitise are happening at the same time (tegelijkertijd) = 2 keer past continuous 
While I was doing the dishes, my sister was dancing in the room.

How do I use the passive? lijdende vorm
  • what? onderwerp ondergaat de handeling en verricht het dus niet zelf. Je gebruikt dit met name als het niet belangrijk is wie het doet. 
  • how? to be + voltooid deelwoord : The dog is washed. The thief was arrested. The parcel has been posted. You had been warned. You will be informed. 
  • wil je wel aangeven wie het doet omdat dit belangrijk is? + by someone
-> The game was won by the team.

Murder Mystery Game 
  1. First fill in the  correct verb forms in worksheet 1, individually (5 min.)
  2. In groups compare your answers on the worksheet and try to produce 1 theory for the question you have been given (use the past simple when you speak!!) (8-10 min). 
  3. Class discussion of the theories  and I will write down some of your answers on the board (5 min.) 
  4. Next,  inspector Simpson's report. Again as a group compare your answers  to the report. The answers to worksheet 1 are in the report, look carefully (8-10 min.)

Detective team 1 : Why were Lord Robert’s letters in the Butler’s room? 
 Detective team 2: Why did Sir George cancel his appointment?
Detective team 3:  Were Lord Robert and Lady Jane happily married? 
Detective team 4:  How was Lord Robert feeling when he died? 

Every group: Who do you think killed Lord Robert? Lady Jane, the Butler, Sir George or someone else?

  2. We will discuss as a class why these are the correct answers compared to the grammar rules.
