Also use the past simple when:
- one action follows another

to refer to a shorter action or event that happened in the middle of a longer one, or interrupted it.

When to use:
- to describe activities from the past from a particular moment. It doesn't matter when it started or finished.
Mum was cooking, my brother was dancing and I was writing.
- after the word

to refer to a longer action that happened at
the same time
as another action
