Washington D.C. is located in the South of the state of Washington.
True or False?
A
True
B
False

Slide 11 - Quiz

Yes, they're located 2,700 miles apart on opposite coasts.

Neither started out as Washingtons.

The East Coast version was first (like most of white America). The Territory of Columbia (now Washington, D.C.) was founded at the territory of the national capital in 1791. (In 1871, it became "District of Columbia.") The City of Washington within the territory/district served as the national capital.

The West Coast version started out in 1852 when settlers established the Columbia Territory (and at the time, Congress was rightfully concerned about the confusion between having two Columbias!) - so it was named Washington Territory, after the first president.

In short, Washington State had nothing to do with Washington, D.C., except as another answer points out, Americans love naming things after our first president (and respected general of the Continental Army). Despite leaders' best efforts to avoid confusion, they created it anyway -- separated by a few thousand miles.
