Review application letter
Couple of general points:
  • We write an email, not an actual letter
  • An application letter is formal, meaning you should use formal language (see lesson up class 2)
  • You should focus on using correct punctuation (see lesson up class 3)
  • You are graded on your English language use (vocabulary, grammar, sentence struture, spelling, punctuation) and on whether you've followed the letter writing rules correctly

Sending your application letter
  • You are going to send your application in through email.

  • You should not have your application letter be your email.
  • You are going to write a short, formal email in which you refer to your application letter and CV in the attachment.

  • The letter and CV will be attached to your email as pdf files (this way, nothing can be accidentally changed and there is no spelling checker).

Slide 18 - Slide

Sending your application letter
First things first, make sure that people can see  what position you are applying for in your subject line.

For instance
subject: application for position of ...

Slide 19 - Slide

Sending your application letter
Next, write a professional, short email in which you refer to the attachments.
For instance:
Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to apply for the position of ... as advertised on your website. In the attachment you can find my motivational letter and CV.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Your faithfully,

Sending your application letter
Finally, make sure you actually attach your letter and CV!
It looks extremely unprofessional when you forget to do this.

Like said, you attach your letter and CV as pdf files.

Slide 21 - Slide

What to do?
  • Chance to receive feedback on your letter writing!
  • Do the assignment from the next two slides. Send this to me through email as if you are sending your application letter. You do not have to make an actual CV.
