Simple, compound & complex
3 types of sentences:
  • simple sentences: one subject + one verb
example: I work in a supermarket every Sunday.
  • compound sentences: when you join two simple sentences with linking words (for, and, nor, but, or, yet or so (FANBOYS))
example: I need to take the test, but I am too sick to go to school.

Slide 5 - Slide

Simple, compound & complex
  • complex sentences:  simple sentence + dependent clause with linking words such as because, although, after, when, before.
  • dependent clause = part of a sentence with a verb that does not express a complete thought.
example: She liked singing in front of the mirror when she was younger.

SO PTO4

Note that you really need to study the vocabulary and especially the translation from your book for words Dutch-English! Lots of points were lost on vocab on the SO.

Slide 7 - Slide

On the test
Part 1 is in testfox: grammar, vocab and stones
Part 2: is on paper with pen: exam texts.
You are allowed to bring EN-NL & NL-EN dictionaries so make sure you do!
! Note that you do not need to know the stones this time because you might have used them in your PO.
! Note that you can answer open questions in English or Dutch

Linking words
Linking words help you to connect ideas and sentences when you speak or write English. We can use linking words to give examples, add information, summarise, sequence information, give a reason or result, or to contrast ideas.
