Unit 1: Our people.
  • Work in small groups (4-5). How do you think the following things reflect our personality?
  • The job we choose.
  • The subjects we choose to study.
  • Our free-time interests.
  • The clothes we wear.
  • The friends we choose.
Discuss in your group for 10 minutes, then discuss in class.

Slide 2 - Slide

Good morning!
  • Today I would like some input from you: Which skills do you prefer to work on most? Listening, Reading, Speaking and/or Writing?
  • We are starting off with what the Cambridge exam will look like.
  • Then if time we will start a reading exercise.

Slide 3 - Slide

Do exercise 2 & 3.

Slide 4 - Slide

End of class
  • How do you feel about these kind of exercises?

  • See you then!

Slide 5 - Slide

  • What skills do you want to work on? Choose from:
    Listening, speaking, reading, writing. Discuss.

Slide 7 - Slide

Our people
  • Grammar: Past tenses - what do you still know? Helpful for writing assignments.
  • Reading and Use of English: Exam practise.
  • Vocabulary: Collocations; A collocation is two or more words that often go together. These combinations just sound "right" to native English speakers, who use them all the time. On the other hand, other combinations may be unnatural and just sound "wrong".
  • 2nd Reading: Exam practise.
  • Read through the assignments thoroughly.

Slide 8 - Slide

Discuss
  • How can a favorable stereotype create harm to an individual or group?
  • How did the US government try to “Americanize” Japanese Americans?
  • Why did the US government want to transform the public perception of Japanese Americans?

Slide 9 - Slide

Today
  • Short feedback writing assignment.
  • Finish assignment and hand in at the end of this class to get feedback.

  • If done: Start Reading practise -> read through hand-out and start practising. Write down which part needs more attention.

  • 09:25 I want to do a listening exercise with short discussion.

Slide 10 - Slide

Feedback writing
  • Use of English = overall good.
  • Short forms = most made mistake. Not allowed in essay (formal) writing -> I'm = I am, don't is do not etc.
  • Impressed by how few spelling errors you make and the use of vocabulary!
  • Finish your assignment and hand in at 09:25 or start reading practise.

Slide 11 - Slide

Listening: Where did English come from?
1: Answer the questions on hand-out in pairs/groups.
We will discuss them aftwerwards.

2: Looking at language over time shows us that all languages are slowly changing all the time. Are there things that you say differently from your parents and grandparents? Make a list and discuss why this may be the case with your family.
