The Punic wars
The first war with Carthage was fought over the island of Sicily, because it was in a strategic location.
But Carthage started a second war. Their brilliant general Hannibal surprised the Romans.
Then, even a third war broke out. As before, Rome was too strong. Carthage fell and this time the Romans had no mercy: they destroyed the city completely.
