past simple/ past continuous/ past perfect?

Past simple
How to use it:
  • Past tense of the verb: verb + ed (y --> ied/ f --> ved)
  • Irregular verbs --> 2nd column

When to use it:
  • Finished actions in the past

  • I washed the dog yesterday.

How to use it:
  • Past tense of "to be" + action verb+ing

When to use it:
  • Action that were happening during a specific period in the past. Usually seen together with the past simple

  • I was washing the dog yesterday when my friend called me.

  • Past tense of "to have" + past participle
  • verb+(e)d or 3rd column irregular verbs

When to use it:
  • Action that had happened before another action happened.
