Today's program and goals...

1) Short grammar review.

Goal: Practice correct use of the past simple and past coninuous together in sentences, including the irregular forms of verbs. 

2) Game

Goal: practice making sentences in the past tense combining shorter and longer actions in one sentence (past simple vs. past coninuous). 

3) Evaluation of today's class

Goal: Evaluate if you're on track with the use of the past and give feedback to your techer on today's class.

A little reminder: signaalwoorden

Signaalwoorden voor de past simple zijn: when, yesterday, last week, last year, three days ago, a long time ago, in 1989, etc.

Signaalwoorden voor de past continuous zijn: when, while, at the same time.

Let's now review what happens in sentences in which we combine both! 

Speaking in the past: 

Past continuous vs. Past simple

- He was swimming in the ocean when he saw a dolphin. 

- They were listening to Spotify when Jimmy's phone broke.

- A ball hit my head when I was taking a photo. 

- Take a close look at these sentences.

- What do you see? Is there a difference between the type of action expressed? 

- Which of the two actions is written in the past simple? What about the past continuous? 

- Discuss this with a classmate.

Keep in mind....

Past continuous vs. past simple

Je kunt de past continuous en de past simple samen in één zin gebruiken. De activiteit die het langst duurt is de past continuous en de kortere activiteit is de past simple. De korte activiteit kan de lange activiteit onderbreken.
