Vasco da Gama
  • In 1498, the Portuguese Vasco da Gama was the first European to sail around Africa to Asia
  • He reached the port city of Calicut in India.
  • In India people were not Christian but believed in Hinduism.
  • It did not take long until Portuguese traders arrived with war ships with cannons.
  • They chased off their Arab competitors who had traded in India for a very long time.
