Your task
  • We will read a text as a group and everyone will be assigned roles: summariser, predictor, questioner, clarifier.
  • At the end of each paragraph you will contribute according to your role.
  • As we go through next few slides on roles, pick your role and I will give you a card to help you with the role.

Slide 4 - Slide

Summariser
  • Identifies the main points
  • Writes 1 or 2 sentences to capture what you have read
  • Thinks like the writer and tries to work out what they wanted us to know in that section

Slide 5 - Slide

Questioner
  • What questions come into your head about what you are reading?
  • Asks questions that will help the group understand what they are reading
  • Thinks of surface questions - Who? What? Where?
  • Thinks of deeper questions - Why? How? Could? Should? Would?

Slide 6 - Slide

Clarifier
  • Clarifies when they think there is something people might not understand
  • Is there a word people might not know?
  • Is something confusing?
  • Is there a sentence that doesn't make sense?

Slide 7 - Slide

Predictor
  • What might happen next?
  • How do you know this?
  • Is there any evidence about this prediction from what you have read so far?

Slide 8 - Slide

Activity
  • Now we will read sections from the text
  • Each person will contribute to the open questions according to their roles.
