Summary of the verb tenses

What are tenses?
  • We form verbs in tenses to tell us about the time of the action/s.
Please watch  the Stepping Stones video and write notes in your notebook or on your SS notes pages, while you listen. 
Remember to look for irregular verb forms in the back of your Stepping Stones, column 2 and 3.

present simple
We eat lunch at noon everyday. (or She/he eats)
past simple
Yesterday they ate lunch. (regular verbs add -ed)
present continuous
We are eating some bread right now. (S/he/it is eating)
past continuous
We were eating ice-cream but it melted. (I was eating...)
present perfect
I have eaten too many sandwiches and now I feel sick. (S/he/it has eaten)
future
I will not (won't) eat sandwiches tomorrow.
We eat dinner at 8 pm this evening.
We are (we're) eating dinner with friends later. We are going to eat dinner later.
used to
We used to like playing with dolls when we were little.

Active and Passive Sentences
  • Active: It is clear  who did the action.
Milan baked a cake.
  • Passive: The action is emphasised, not who did it.
A cake was baked (by Milan).

Why do we use the passive voice?
  • The passive voice is less personal.
  • It's used if we don't know who or what did something, or if the doer is not important.

How?
1. Place the object at the start of the sentence
2.Use a form of to be + past participle of the main verb
is/am/are 
were/was
is/am/are/were/was being

The thief stole the jewellery. >The jewellery was stolen (by the thief).
The girl brushes the horse. >The horse is being brushed  (by the girl).
