Simple sentence
  • 1 subject, 1 verb, and a complete thought.

'Grace opened the door.'

'The table and chairs needed to be cleaned.'

'The boy smiled and nodded.'
Also known as Independent clauses.

Compound sentences.
Two or more independent clauses (simple sentences) joined together by coordinating conjunctions.

'grace opened the door. She looked outside.'
'Grace opened the door and she looked outside.'

An independent clause (simple sentence) +
a dependent clause.
'When he won the race, everyone cheered.'

A dependent clause is not a completed thought.
