The Ottoman empire

• Arose from a small state close to the Byzantine Empire. 
• Managed to conquer Constantinople, meaning the end of the Byzantine Empire.
• Constantinople was now the capital of the Ottoman Empire. 

They conquered even more: Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Arabia & Egypt. 

The sultan

The Ottoman sultan became successor (opvolger) of Muhammad. As a religious and secular (seculiere) leader. 

The sultan saw himself as the successor of the Roman emperor (keizer). 

The Spanish empire

• Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon merged their countries by marriage. 
• reconquista : the Christian reconquest of Spain
• Columbus discoverd America. 
• Charles V (remember him?) inherited the kingdom and expanded it. 
• "The sun never sets in the Spanish empire"

Different beliefs

The Spanish empire was Cathlic, the Ottoman empire was Islamic. 

How did they treat people with other beliefs?

Mediterranean sea trade

Began to demise because:

• Ottoman rulers allowed Italian merchants in a few ports only
• Pirates!
