How to learn?

Slide 1 - Slide

How to study for a
History test?

Slide 2 - Slide

With your book or device closed!
...ok, not quite,
but we'll start there...

Slide 3 - Slide

What to learn?
You've been working on the subject for a few lessons, so of course it's not entirely new.

First go over for yourself what you already know about the subject, with your book closed

You can do this, for example, with the following questions

Slide 4 - Slide

What do I know already?
What topic did we discuss in class?

What period is it about?

When was that period?

What time period?

Slide 5 - Slide

Ok, now add your laptop and the portal
First, look at the title of the chapter and paragraphs: What is this chapter and/or paragraph about?

You do the same for each title above a small text: What could this text be about?

Slide 6 - Slide

4 W's
For each title and image (chapter, paragraphs, texts, titles), always think of four questions starting with:

Why ...
Who ...
What ...
When ...

Slide 7 - Slide

What else do I do with the texts?
Which terms are bold, italicised, or underlined?

Which names/concepts are often repeated?

Do I understand all the words? No, read again or look them up.

Are there dates in the text? And how are they used?

Slide 8 - Slide

And how do I best learn terms, people and years?

Flashcards! Or study cards, as they are called in Dutch.

You can make these on paper or digitally (Quizlet.com).

Slide 9 - Slide

Checken!
Look at the learning objectives in the mission and try to answer/work them out.
You will practise the difficult parts extra

Slide 10 - Slide

During the test (1)
First, carefully read through all the questions. Don't stress immediately when you see the questions.

What is being asked?

What do I know about that?

Where did it say that again in
the book? Try to remember
which text it was in.

Slide 11 - Slide

During the test (2)
  • Think first, then write: what is actually being asked?
Use part of the question in your answer.

No cliffhangers, it is a test not a soap opera.

Write as completely as possible.

Slide 12 - Slide

During the test (3)
Don't write down too many reasons when e.g.: 2 are asked. Only the first 2 are counted correctly.

If two different things are asked, write different things.

After doing all the questions, read the test again carefully.
