Past simple regular verbs
  • You use the past simple to talk about actions/ events that happened in the past.
  • The action/ event is finished. There's no connection with the present.

To make the past simple of a regular verb you add -(e)d.

My mum liked my new swimsuit a lot. 
We changed flights in London.

Past simple irregular verbs
  • For irregular verbs there is no rule you can follow in the past simple.
  • You need to learn the forms of the verbs.
For example:
  • (to) be = was/ were
  • (to) buy = bought

1. Staat er was/were of een hulpww als could/would in de zin?
Was/ were of het hulpww (could/ would) aan het begin van de zin.
- Was your mum in Italy two week ago?
- Were you happy to go back home?
- Could you take photos of the dolphins?

1. Bij was/were of een hulpww als could/ would voeg je -n't (not) aan het woord.
- She wasn't in Italy.
- Rick and Bo weren't happy to leave France.
- I couldn't see the Mona Lisa in Paris.

2. Bij andere ontkenningen in de verleden tijd zet je didn't voor het hoofdwerkwoord.
Na didn't komt altijd het hele werkwoord.
- I didn't bring my sunglasses.
- Lucy didn't like camping.
