What is artisanal fishing?

Illegal Fishing
Illegal fishing means that the fishermen enter the territorial waters of a country or regulated marine zone without permission or without a license for the fish they intend to catch.

They are stealing from these waters.
ARTISANAL FISHING:
food is sourced in a traditional way.

Local communities sourcing food to sustain the community, using small scale traditional ways of fishing.

We are going to take a look at some examples from Sea Shepherd campaigns. These campaigns focus on illegal fishing in west Africa.  Along the African coast many communities rely on the ocean for food and income, using small-scale fishing methods.
Illegal fishing vessels have been raiding the waters of these countries, reducing fish numbers close to shore, and impacting these communities.

We are going to take a look at a couple of videos that show what is happening in this region.
