History
Kenya was part of the British Empire  from 1895 until 1963.
Kenya is famous for its landscapes and wildlife. The British used the Kenyan ground for their tea plantations. Kenya is also well known for its fables and legends. A long time ago people lived very close to nature and they made up stories for entertainment and tradition. One of these fables is about how the zebra got its stripes.

How the zebra got its stripes [Luhya]

Long ago, the only tame animals were dogs and men hunted and killed animals to eat When men went into the bush to hunt, they carried the prey on their backs. Sometimes the prey was too heavy for a hunter to carry so one man decided to find a better way. Maybe it was easier for a strong animal to carry the prey? Just then he noticed a donkey in the bush.

The man took the prey and put it on the back of the donkey. The donkey accepted the load, and the man led the way to his village.
He unloaded the donkey and gave it some food the donkey liked the food and from this time on, the man kept the donkey.

The story went round the village that someone had a tame donkey. Now everyone wanted a tame donkey to carry their heavy loads because it worked so hard. They went into the bush and found their own wild donkeys and tamed them.

The villagers captured many donkeys, so the donkeys started to hide in the bush. They were frightened when they realised that a lot of their friends were no longer free.

Slide 7 - Slide

The donkeys worried that their friends worked too hard and only received just enough food to survive.

The rest of the donkeys wanted to stay free. They talked about how to solve the problem. One donkey suggested to ask Hare for help, as he was the smartest animal in Kenya.  The next morning the donkeys went to see Hare. He agreed to help them.

Hare asked all the donkeys to come to his house early the next morning. When they arrived, they found Hare with white paint in a big can and a big paint brush.

The donkeys wondered why. Hare tried to explain that he wanted to put paint on them. At first the donkeys were very stubborn, and nobody wanted to be first.

Finally, one donkey volunteered and stepped forward. Immediately, Hare started painting stripes of white paint on the donkey's skin. Soon the donkey had black-and-white stripes instead of being plain black or grey. As the first donkey received his stripes, the other donkeys admired him. Now they all wanted to look like their friend. They all fought to reach the paint bucket first.

Slide 8 - Slide

Hare warned them but it was too late One donkey pushed to the front and stepped in the paint bucket. The whole bucket fell over and the paint spilled out

This was the end of everything. There was not paint left over for the rest of the donkeys.
The unfortunate donkeys who were still black or grey became pack animals for humans. Those donkeys that had stripes were safe from humans. They were the lucky ones and changed their name to zebras. This is how the zebra got its stripes.
