Je gebruikt can/cannot/can't bij vaardigheden:

I can swim

You can sing very well

They are Dutch, so they can ride a bike

CAN VS. COULD

Kunnen - can      Niet kunnen - can't of cannot

Verleden tijd - could

Ook gebruik je could in de volgende situaties:

ials je iets zou kunnen

Als je iets beleefd vraagt.

To be able to

Je gebruikt to be able to om te zeggen dat iemand in staat is:

I'm not able to run a marathon.

We're able to go to your party tonight.

The police are unable to find the thief.

to be able to + hele ww

Let op! je moet 'to be' vervoegen:

I am able to play football.

He is able to play football.

They are able to play football.

To be able to/To be allowed to

Be able to: in staat zijn om, dankzij hulpmiddelen / vaardigheden / kennis van zaken

I am able to speak to English. 

Be allowed to: het is (niet) toegestaan volgens de regels

I am allowed to go out tonight.

to be able to + hele ww in de VT

Als je wilt zeggen dat je ergens toe in staat was.

I was able to play football. (but not anymore because I broke my leg)

My mother  and father were able to read small letters. (but not anymore because they need glasses)

                     Je kunt het alleen gebruiken in de present simple.  

___________________betekent "zou kunnen" of "zou mogen", of in 

                    de verleden tijd, met de betekenis "konden/mochten".
