Vietnam Draft Lottery: Number 021
‘I got number 021 in the draft lottery. That’s a very low number. However, I thought I wouldn’t have to go to war because of my bad knees. Unfortunately, in the summer of 1970 I was told I had to go to Vietnam. I was working at a grocery store in my hometown Phoenix, Arizona when they told me I had to report for duty in two weeks. I spent most of those two weeks back home with my best friend, Sonny. He had just returned from Vietnam. He told me to flee. I thought about crossing the Mexican border, but was too afraid of getting caught.’
