Defining relative clauses
Clause: a group of words containing a subject and a verb which form a sentence, or part of a sentence
Ex: I can´t cook very well, but I make quite cook pancakes

Relative clause: starts with a relative pronoun (who, which, etc.)
Ex: The man who called you is my dentist

Defining relative clauses
A defining relative clause gives us essential information. We need to understand what or who is being reffered to.

The dentist who treated me was my uncle
*We don´t use comma´s*

Who: used for people
             Ex: the woman who lives next door is a doctor.
Which: for things
             Ex: the car in which we drove to London is my mum´s. 
Whose: instead of his/her/their
             Ex: a nurse is someone whose job is to care for ill people
Where: for places
             Ex: I want to create gardens where I can grow vegetables

Defining relative clauses
Who/which or ´that´ can be omitted when there are the object of the clause. Ex: Who´s the man that I saw you with?

*we can use ´that´ instead of ´who´ or ´which´ (informa)l*

Ex: The picture that hangs on the wall
*we can use ´whom´(formal) instead of ´who´ when the        pronoun follows a preposition* 
Ex: Is this the man to whom you are referring?
