Norsemen

Unrest in Europe
After Charlemagne's death, his empire is divided into three parts (843):
East: grandson Louis the German
West: grandson Karel de Kale
Middle: Grandson Emperor Lothair
Wars weakened the emperor's power in the Netherlands
In addition: looting by vikings
843: Vikings plunder Dorestad, near Utrecht

Slide 22 - Slide

Charlemagne comes into conflict with the Normans:
1. His enemies, the Saxons, were friends of the Normans.
2. The Normans wanted to conquer the riches of his territory.
3. The Normans did not want to convert to Christianity.

Slide 23 - Slide
