Culture

What is culture? 

Culture is the collection of customs and (unwritten) social laws of a group of people. Culture is something learned, and not something you were born with.

Cultural elements are the most important characteristics of a culture, like religion, language and also values and standards.

Value vs Standard

Values are things that we find important 

Standards are the rules of behaviour that we follow to live up to these values

Language families

Dutch, German and English are pretty similar languages in many ways.

This is because they are part of the same language family: a group of related languages that have grown from the same ancestral language. 

In other words, you might just consider the English and Dutch languages as cousins!

Cultural region = An area in which you find people with about the same cultural elements.

Cultural region = An area in which you find people with about the same cultural elements.

The nuance- (Een nuance is een subtiel onderscheid)

Things like: language, religion ,food, clothes, habits and behavior might be different. It is not always the case!!

Norms and values are almost everywhere the same, and culture has changed over the centuries.

Tradition is a part of culture but not everyone in the same cultural region has the same traditions

Culture or tradition

---traditions describe a group’s beliefs and behaviors that are passed down from one generation to another, this changes over the years.

---Culture describes the shared characteristics of the entire group, which has been amassed throughout its history.

For example: It used to be tradition in the Netherlands to offer cigarettes to your visitors on the coffeetable. Now most people don't do that anymore. But we still offer coffee or thee to our visitors. Offering something to drink our eat is a tradition that is part of our culture. 

Or just..communication problems?

So, it seems we are more the same as we think

So, what is the difference between a stereotype and a cultural element?

You will create a presentation in the form of a poster, paper, powerpoint or video.
