- You know what a 'passive' sentence is and can create passive sentences in 

all tenses. 

Why/when do we use the passive?

Why a Passive?

1. The 'object' of an action is made important.

Active: People make most cars in Asia.

Passive: Most cars are made in Asia.

Why a Passive?

2. The 'agent' of an action is unknown or irrelevant.

Active: The police arrested the thief.

Passive: The thief was arrested (by the police).

Change into passive:

1. We are preparing over twenty dishes for the party.

1. Over twenty dishes are being prepared for the party.

Original is Present Continuous 'are preparing'

so the Passive needs to be too!

Change into passive:
2. Someone brought potatoes to Europe from Peru.
(start with 'Potatoes')

Change into passive:
3. The cook has made this dessert without eggs.
(start with 'This dessert')

Change into passive:
4. Parents should not allow children to eat too many sweets. (start with 'Children')

ACTIVE= He steals a bike.

Subject = He

Verb = steals

Object = a bike

ACTIVE

AGENT = Who / What performs the ACTION is at the beginning of the sentence.

PASSIVE: 

Hundreds of  bikes are stolen each year.

                     

           

          Subject = Hundreds of bikes

Verb = are stolen

PASSIVE

The 'victim' is in the beginning of the sentence. The Agent (who did 'it') is unknown.

How to recognize a passive sentence...

- check if there is a form of 'to be' used (am, are, is, was, were, been)

- is it followed by a participle (voltooid deelwoord)?

- is it followed by 'by + noun or pronoun? If not, can it be followed by 'by zombies'?

Are all answers 'yes'? Congratulations, you have a passive sentence.
