Learning goals
I can....
  • describe the general components of a transport system and why they are important.
  • describe the different types of blood vessels and their differences.
  • list the parts of the heart.
  • list the path of the blood flow through the heart.
  • list the different components of blood and their functions.

Circulatory System
Provides your body with the transport of oxygen and nutrients around the body.

Organs: heart, veins, arteries and capillaries

Slide 8 - Slide

The function of the Ciculatory system
The system responsible for transport through the body:
  • oxygen
  • carbon dioxide
  • nutrients
  • waste
  • water
  • hormones

Slide 9 - Slide

How does this transport takes place?
By means of a pump (the heart).

This pump is connected to a large system of tubes that run all through the body. (bloodvessels).

Slide 11 - Slide

The heart
The heart has four chambers:
  • 2 atria
  • 2 ventricles

The right side receives oxygen poor blood
and pushes it to the lungs

The left side receives oxygen rich blood
and pushes it to the body

Valves prevent backflow

Circulatory system:
  • Looks like a figure 8
  • Is connected with respiration and gas exchange

Slide 14 - Slide

Blood
Blood is made out of the following things:

  • Plasma:                           Water, nutrients, hormones, waste products
  • Red blood cells:          Hemoglobin for oxygen transport
  • White blood cells:      Defense against pathogens
  • Platelets:                        Helps to stop bleeding
