Gebruik de verkorte vorm alleen als je deze correct spelt.

Must / Mustn’t 

Je gebruikt must (not) + het hele werkwoord als jij vindt dat iets (niet) moet.

Must is krachtiger dan should. Je geeft jouw mening dus meer kracht mee.

Voorbeelden:

• You must wear a facemask in school.
• You mustn’t buy that expensive phone. It doesn’t work properly.

Should of Shouldn’t 

Je gebruikt should (not) + hele w.w. als jij vindt dat iets (niet) zou moeten.

 

Je wilt bijvoorbeeld advies geven of iets afraden.

Have to/ Has to of do not have/ has to

Je gebruikt has to / have to + het hele werkwoord om zekerheid, noodzaak of verplichting uit te drukken.

Je gebruikt has / have to + het hele werkwoord ook om te zeggen dat iets moet van iemand anders en dus NIET omdat jij dat zelf vindt:

Voorbeelden:

• Children under sixteen have to go to school. It's the law.(Kinderen onder de zestien moeten naar school.
  (Dat is de wet.)
• Jim has to take two pills every day. That's what they told him at the hospital.
  (Jim moet elke dag twee pillen nemen. Dat zeiden ze in het ziekenhuis.)
  
• Dennis has to get his drivers licence before he can drive a tractor.

Let op! Als je have to in ontkennende zinnen gebruikt, dan verandert de betekenis van ‘moeten’ in ‘niet hoeven’. 

Met don’t have to / doesn’t have to + het hele werkwoord geef je aan dat er geen verplichting is.
