Future tense

The future is used to indicate that something is going to happen in the (near) future.

There are three different ways of using the future.

Present simple for future events

To be going to

Will

Present simple for future events

events that are scheduled or arranged

The supermarket closes at 10:00 pm. 

The train arrives at 11:15 am. 

Our school trip is next month.

To be going to

to talk about future plans or intentions.

to be (am/is/are)  +  (not) going to  +  verb

My parents are going to visit a museum later this afternoon.

Geoffrey is going to study in Berlin when he’s older.

We’re going to explore the city centre tomorrow.

Will

to make promises, 

 to make predictions about the future.

Will can also be shortened to –’ll.

Don’t worry, they will be fit in time for the match.

TIP!

To make someone an offer, you use shall instead of will. 

You then form a question with I or we, such as: 

Shall I help you with your homework?
