 Direct/Indirect Speech

We gebruiken reported speech om op een later tijdstip te herhalen wat wij zelf hebben gezegd, of wat iemand anders heeft gezegd. 

Direct speech:
"We are trying to pay attention!"

Indirect speech: 
They said (that) they were trying to pay attention. 

Kijk op de volgende slide goed naar de twee zinnen (direct en indirect) en wat er in een andere kleur is geschreven. 

Probeer alvast de volgende vragen te beantwoorden voor jezelf: 

- Wat gebeurt er met de werkwoorden? 

- Wat gebeurt er met voornaamwoorden? (I,you, us, his, her, our) 

- wat gebeurt er met bijwoorden van plaats en tijd?

Direct speech:	Indirect speech:
"It is cold here ."	She said it was cold there .
" We w on our match yesterday ."	They said they had won their match the day before .
" I will help you ."	The teacher said he would help me
" I have written a book."	He said he had written a book.
" We have been working too hard today. "	They said they had been working too hard that day.
I'm going to do my homework tonight.	She said she was going to do her homework that night .

	Geeft weer wat iemand letterlijk zegt	Beschrijft wat iemand zegt
1. Begin de zin met bijvoorbeeld: He said (that)...They asked if....	Do you like the beach?	He asked if I liked the beach.
2. Zet de zin in de juiste verleden tijd.	I know the story.	He said (that) I knew the story.
3. Pas de verwijzingen aan.	I am leaving tomorrow .	She told me (that) she was leaving the next day.

De tijden veranderen

- Present simple                --> Past simple

- Present continuous      --> Past continuous

- Present perfect               --> Past perfect

- Past simple                        --> Past perfect 

Maak nu een voorbeeld met ''to work'' 

De tijden veranderen

                                               I said that I.....

- I work                               --> worked

- I am working                --> was working

- I have worked              --> had worked

- I worked                         --> had worked 

Which is correct?
"I'm working hard."
He said....

1. ...that he is working hard .
2. ...that he was working hard.
3. ...that he works hard.
4. ...that he worked hard .

Which is correct?
"I haven't seen him since last night."
She said...

1. she hadn't seen him since the previous night.
2. she hadn't seen him since last night
3. she hasn't seen us since the previous night
4. she hasn't seen him since the previous night.

"Yeah, I think Max is an incredible driver."

1. Direct speech
2. Indirect speech

Direct or Indirect?

The chauffeur said: "Get in!"

1. Direct Speech
2. Indirect Speech

Choose the correct answer:
1. The students asked: "Can we leave now?"
2. The students asked if they could leave.

1. 1= direct speech, 2= indirect speech
2. 1= indirect speech, 2= direct speech
3. 1 and 2 are both indirect speech
4. 1 and 2 are both direct speech

Now try this one....
"I haven't finished my homework yet."

"I am tired because I have been working too hard."
