LITERATURE
Literatuur: ook wel letterkunde, is de verzamelde schriftelijke neerslag van een land of van een periode, voor zover het geschriften betreft die hun waarde ontlenen aan veronderstelde vormschoonheid of emotioneel effect.
Het gaat dus om geschriften die gewaardeerd worden als kunstwerken, met name fictie, drama en poëzie.

Engelse literatuur verwijst traditioneel in de eerste plaats naar literatuur in het Engels, geschreven door de inwoners van de Britse eilanden (inclusief Ierland).

Literatuur kun je in de meeste gevallen goed (leren) begrijpen door te kijken naar de context waar het in werd geschreven. Denk maar aan de Great War Poets.
