Adjectives = bijvoeglijk nw

Een bijvoeglijk naamwoord gebruik je om iets of iemand 

te omschrijven. Het zegt iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord:

That is an amazing girl.

We all love that funny movie.

I think he is a terrible teacher.

Adverb = bijwoord

1. Een bijwoord omschrijft vaak een werkwoord, 

Mary sings wonderfully.

2. Een bijwoord omschrijft soms een bijvoeglijk naamwoord 

I am eating an amazingly delicious steak right now.

3. Een bijwoord omschrijft soms een ander bijwoord.

Hoe maak je een bijwoord?

Bijvoeglijk naamwoord + LY

(fantastic - fantastically)

Y - ILY

funny - funnily

Uitzonderingen:

good - well

quite - quite

fast - fast

hard - hard  (let op: hardly = nauwelijks!!)

long - long

Let op!

1. My teachers are nice.

2. That car looks beautiful.

3. Haggis smells awful.

Na koppelwerkwoorden zoals: to be (zijn), to seem (lijken), to feel (zich voelen) + to look (eruitzien), to smell (ruiken), to sound (klinken), to taste (smaken) gebruik je geen bijwoord, maar een bijvoegelijk naamwoord.

DUS...

Ron is a careful driver.

Ron drives carefully.

Een bijwoord staat in het algemeen vóór het woord waarover het iets zegt.

• vóór een bijvoeglijk naamwoord of een ander bijwoord:

You’re going to become extremely popular.
She is working really seriously on the e-zine.
