reasons to use passive

1) we want to change the focus of the sentence

- The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci -> more interested in painting, than in artist

2) who or what causes the action is unknown/ unimportant or obvious or people in general
* He is arrested. (obvious by whom = police)

* My bike is stolen. (unknown by whom)

* The road is repaired. (unimportant by whom)

* The form can be obtained from post offices.(people in general

* The chemical is placed in a test tube and the data entered into the computer.
