FIRST CONDITIONAL & 

SECOND CONDITIONAL

Today's targets

• I know the difference between different conditionals starting with 'if.....'
• I am able to use two different forms of conditionals in different situations.

What are conditionals?

'If' statements - 3 kinds:

• First conditional: real or likely situations - If a soldier kills the ogre, he will be named champion.
• Second conditional: unlikely or hypothetical situations - If I won the lottery, I could/would go travelling around the world.

Real/likely situation: If + present simple => will

"If you go outside in the rain without a coat, you will get wet!"

Real / likely situations: 1st conditional

Structure

if + present simple

Result: will + verb (I will get)

Unlikely situation: If + past simple = > would

Unreal / unlikely situations: 2nd conditional

Structure: if + past simple

Condition: (If I did)

result: would + verb (would I be)

"If I won the lottery, I would buy a new car!"

Careful: 2nd conditional 

Noteworthy exception !

The form 'to be'  becomes 'were' not 'was' when giving advice!

"If I were you, I would talk to a teacher."

Giving advice / imagining situations:

If I were you, I would study harder.

If I were a boy (even just for one day), I would roll out of bed in the morning.......... (Beyoné)

If I were a rich man, (Fiddler on the Roof) I would live a life of luxury.

De First Conditional gaat alleen over feiten.

Je maakt de first conditional met:

1. 'if' + present simple + will/won't + hele werkwoord
2. 'if' + past simple + would/wouldn't + hele werkwoord
3. 'if' + present simple + past simple
4. 'if' + past simple + present simple

Choose the First Conditional

1. She'll miss the bus if she doesn't leave soon.
2. When water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.
3. If I met the Queen of England, I would say hello.
4. She would travel all over the world if she were rich.

Pick the Second Conditional sentence.

• 1 cond.: real, likely situations : I will catch the bus, if I run.
• 2 cond.: unreal, unlikely situations : If I were President, I would stop the war.
