What are Degrees of Comparison?

Degrees of comparison are used to compare one person, thing, or idea to another.

- comparatives

- superlatives

 

Explain the concept of degrees of comparison and provide examples.

When something is just as beautiful, nice of fast as something else, you use:

 As ..................... as

This dog is as cute as that one.

When we compare things and something is bigger / faster / nicer, we use a: comparative

           big                 bigger

In order to form a comparative, you add -er to the adjective

 

small - smaller

fast - faster

high - higher

       small           smaller

A comparative is always followed by  than

This dog is smaller than that one.

smaller than

Here is Emily. She's six years old. Her brother is nine, so he is...........

When we compare things and something is the best / nicest / biggest, we use a superlative

           big                 bigger                 biggest

To form a superlative, you add -est to an adjective

highest

You always put the in front of a superlative

3 exceptions:

words ending with -y:

ugly, lazy, early, heavy

comparive: uglier, earlier

Irregular comparatives / superlatives:

• little/ few - less - least
• bad - worse - worst
• good - better - best

Long adjectives have different rules:

• famous
• difficult

You just add more in front of the adjective to form a comparison:

• more beautiful
• more intelligent
• more wonderful
• more exciting

You just add most in front of the adjective to form a superlative:
